September 2004 Pennsylvania Weather Summary
September 1st - 7th : Temperatures remained near 80F into the first week of September. The remnants of Hurricane Frances summoned cloudy conditions throughout the week. The cloud cover, along with a cold front that became the avenue for the tropical system on the 6th, kept western and central PA on the cool side with little variation in temperature throughout the day.
September 8th – 14th: Heavy rain arrived on September 8-9 as the eastern half of the state measured between 0.5-2.0 inches and central and western Pennsylvania tallied between 2 and 6 inches of rain. The second weekend of the month had the most pleasant weather in several months.
September 16th - 19th: The latter half of September's weather held true to the first in terms of rainfall. In the early morning hours of September 16, Hurricane Ivan made landfall on the gulf coast and subsequently paraded up toward Pennsylvania. On Friday, September 17, the remnants of Ivan interacted with a cold front and produced monumental amounts of rain on already saturated soils across the state. Widespread historic flooding was felt all through the Juniata and Susquehanna River basins.
September 20th – 25th: Once Ivan moved out to sea, near average high temperatures and seasonable lows draped across the Commonwealth. High pressure moved over the Mid Atlantic region on the 20th, which allowed fair conditions to prevail to the 25th, when another front pushed through the region.
September 26th – 30th: The same storm that affected Pennsylvania was a major steering mechanism for Hurricane Jeanne, which made landfall in Florida on the 26th. Subsequently, the remnants of Jeanne moved north and again plagued the state with torrential downpours, especially in areas east of the Susquehanna. After Jeanne exited, the October weather that ensued was much more tranquil.
