September Weather Summary
~Christina Toth~
Sept 1st Sept 7th
As
the first week in September began a cold front swept into Pennsylvania and
lingered within the state dropping temperatures from the high 70’s to the mid
60’s. A low pressure system worked its way through PA during the
beginning of the week, before moving its way out towards the Atlantic.
Another cold front made its way through the region during mid week this brought
a slight decrease in temperatures to the area.
The front was being followed by a high pressure system that worked its way over
PA and lingered there during the end of the week. Rain showers remained
throughout the week and began to taper off towards the end of the week, due to
the high pressure system over the area.
Sept 8th - Sept 14th
A
high pressure system lingered over PA for most of the week, finally working its
way northeast on the 12th.
Temperatures stayed in the high 70’s and the area stayed rain free during the
time the system was over the area. Once the high pressure system lifted
into the New England region at the end of the week, temperatures dropped to the
low 70’s and some light rain over the area.
Sept 15th - Sept 21st
The cold front that was located in
the Great Lakes region last week now worked its way across PA and lingered out
in the Atlantic during the beginning of the week. The passing of the
front brought a slight dip in temperatures, knocking them from the low 80’s to
the low 70’s. The front was trailed by a high pressure system that
lingered over PA till mid week which it then worked its way up into the New
England region. The temperatures gradually rose during this time and the
area stayed rain free. On Sept 18th while the high pressure system worked its way out of the region, not
far southeast in the Atlantic hurricane Isabel was churning off the coast of
North Carolina. A warm front interposed
between Isabel and the coast. By Friday Sept 19th hurricane Isabel reached PA.
Isabel swept her way through western and central PA, but also caused wind and
rain all throughout PA and to the surrounding areas. The temperatures
dipped from the high 70’s to the high 60’s during this time. The warm
front that was positioned between the Carolina coast and Isabel the previous
day was pushed in front of the hurricanes as Isabel moved west.
With the passing
of hurricane Isabel the cold front that was Great Lakes region moved its way
east across PA and out into the Atlantic. A high pressure system trailed
behind the cold front and then worked its way north into Canada. The area
received a relief from the rain at the end of the week, which was much enjoyed
after the passing of Isabel. Temperatures also returned to the mid 70’s.
Sept 22nd
- Sept 30th
The week started with a passing of a cold
front bringing a slight decrease in temperatures, but remaining near the
70’s. Some precipitation fell on the area with the passing of the
front. A high pressure system moved into the area following the front,
but moved out of the area by mid week. Another cold front pushed its way
into western PA bringing the temperatures slightly down into the high
60’s. By the end of the week, a low pressure system hovered over the
Great Lakes region.
A cold front
brought cooler temperatures to the PA area before it swept across PA by the 28th. With the cold front stalling
out in the Atlantic, a high pressure system slowly worked its way near
PA. Temperatures changed drastically over the last few days. Temperatures
were in the high 70’s in northeast PA and the high 60’s in southwest PA on
Sunday Sept 28th, and ending the month with
temperatures in the high 50’s in northeast PA and the low 50’s in southwest PA.
