May 2004 Pennsylvania Weather Summary
May 1st- May 8th
May 1st kicked off the month of wet weather with light rain falling across the state preceding an approaching cold front. This rain stuck around through the passing of the front on the 4th, with the heaviest rainfall amounts recorded on the 3rd. Cooler temperatures that were brought in by a high-pressure system on the 5th were raised into the 60’s and 70’s on the 7th. Some light rain fell late on the 7th and into the 8th, as a cold front moved through the region.
May 9th- May 16th
The passing of the previous cold front brought cooler temperatures into the region on the 9th and also dropped rain in northern Pennsylvania. Convective activity occurred in southeastern PA on the 10th. A large low-pressure system to the north allowed more rain to fall in northern Pennsylvania on the 11th. The warm sector created by the large pressure system brought temperatures in the high 80’s for much of the state until rain was dropped on the 15th and 16th, as the cold front finally passed through.
May 18th- May 23rd
The rainy month continued with wet weather in western Pennsylvania on the 18th and rain across much of the state on the 19th preceding a cold front. The southwest saw heavy rain on the 21st (Pittsburgh had about 1.5”) and some impressive thunderstorms passed through the western and central regions of Pennsylvania. Rain fell in northern Pennsylvania again on the 22nd and into the 23rd, while the Philadelphia area saw temperatures reach into the 90’s on the 23rd.
May 24th- May 31st
The remaining days of May saw more rain in Northern PA on the 24th. More impressive, however, were the powerful thunderstorms seen on the 26th. Rain and thunderstorms occurred in the central counties and even dropped some hail as well. To conclude the significant weather events for the month, some light rain fell over the state on the 27th as a cold front passed through. Temperatures remained in the 70’s for the rest of the month.
