February 2002 Pennsylvania
Weather Summary
The month of February 2002 brought above normal temperatures and below normal precipitation for the state of Pennsylvania. Many cities set record lows for snow and precipitation totals for this month. On Feb 2nd, Punxsutawney Phil predicted six more weeks of winter. His prediction turned out to be wrong.
The first couple of days in February brought some rain showers, more falling in western Pennsylvania, as well as temperatures well above normal. For the majority of the state, temperatures on the 1st were near 20 degrees above the average.
A cold front moved in dropping temperatures below normal on February 4th and 5th bringing snow to Western Pennsylvania.
The state remained dry and temperatures again were above normal from February 5th till the 9th. On the 10th, a cold front moved through bringing snow to parts of Western Pennsylvania and rain to the rest of the state. Temperatures still remained slightly above normal.
Western Pennsylvania received some more rain on February 16th and 17th followed by a cold front causing temperatures to fall slightly below normal. Eastern and Central Pennsylvania remained dry and temperatures stayed above normal.
A large high-pressure system moved over the state keeping the state dry and warmer than usual on February 18th and 19th.
A warm front passed over the state on February 20th bringing showers to western Pennsylvania with light rain over the rest of the state. Temperatures were almost 20 degrees above normal again. Shortly after the warm front came through, a cold front crashed in and dropped the temperatures below normal for the next couple of days.
Temperatures rose above normal again on the 24th but another cold front came through on the 26th dropping temperatures across the state for the rest of the month. Some rain fell from this front on the 26th. More rain fell in the west
To sum up the month of February, temperatures were way above normal for most of the month, dropping below average for only a few days. Precipitation was lower than the normal for this month with the exception of Erie. Erie had a little over the normal but was way below normal for snowfall due to the warmer temperatures.
