August 2003 PA Weather Summary
8/1 – 8/3
A stationary boundary passed over the area. The temperatures ranged between the 70’s to 80’s during those days. Most of the state received some precipitation.
8/4 – 8/6
A low pressure system approached the PA area on 8/4 and pushed through the area during these days. This brought warmer air ahead of the system and slightly cooler air following behind. The area also received some precipitation.
8/7
PA remained in a trough. The temperatures began to increase as the low pressure lifted to the north. Showers lingered on in the area.
8/8 – 8/10
A low pressure system developed off the coast of NJ and edged over into PA lingered over the area during these days. The system brought a slight increase in temperatures to northeast PA and a slight dip in temperatures in southwest PA, but temperatures then returned back into the low 80’s by 8/10. There was an increase in cloud cover as the low swept through the area, as well as some precipitation lingering around.
8/11 – 8/13
The eastern US remained in a trough. A stationary front approached PA on 8/11 and lingered over PA on the 12th and 13th. The approaching and lingering of the low brought a slight decrease in temperatures and brought on some showers to the area.
8/14 – 8/15
As the stationary front stalled over PA the past few days, a high moved east and centered over the Great Lakes. The high dominated the weather for those days bringing a relief in precipitation for PA and also bringing the area temperatures into the high 80’s.
8/16 – 8/17
A cold front began pushing southeast from Canada. A high pressure system tagged along behind the front. As the front passed allowing the high to expand over PA it brought a slight decrease in temperatures for the area, but still remained in the 80’s.
8/18 – 8/20
The center of the high pressure system made its way over PA, pushing the then cold front but now stationary front southeast. The front was wedged between two high pressure systems, before the southern high gave way and the front moved further east over the Atlantic. The temperatures dropped slightly as the high lingered over PA, but temperatures began to increase once the high passed over. The sky became slightly clearer as the high remained over the area, which left the area rain free.
8/21 – 8/23
The high pressure system that passed over PA has now moved southeast. A low centered in southeast Canada had a cold front tailing off that was knocking on the door in northwest PA on the 22nd. The temperatures increased into the high 80’s before the front passed over PA. The front stalled out south of PA, the high pressure system followed behind the front and centered over the Great Lakes. As the front passed it brought showers and thunderstorms.
8/24
The high pressure system that was over the Great Lakes moved its way southeast centering over Lake Erie. The temperatures dropped slightly averaging near 80 with the help of some northern refreshing winds.
8/25
The high pressure system was nudged south by an advancing cold front. Temperatures ranged from the mid to high 70’s.
8/26
The high pressure system pushed its way further south, centering over the southeast. The return flow of air out of the south brought warmer temperatures to the area. The frontal boundary stayed to the north of Erie but dipped down into eastern PA. This front blocked off the warm air cycled from the southeast, along with the easterly flow from the low off the coast of Maine. Due to this frontal boundary temperatures in northeast PA reached the low 80’s, while southwest PA enjoyed nice warm temperatures in the high 80’s.
8/27 – 8/28
As a cold front approached NW PA on the 27th temperatures slightly dipped from the cooler air out of the New England region. As the front passed over PA, the high pressure system behind it over-powered the high pressure system that lingered on the other side of the front. The high pressure system that was centered over Georgia now advanced over the Atlantic.
8/29
The high pressure system that was over PA yesterday worked its way north and off the coast of Maine. A warm front swept through eastern PA blocking the warm sector from the southeast. The warm front brought temperatures in the mid 80’s for southwest PA and temperatures in the high 70’s for northeast PA.
8/30
Temperatures increased all over PA. A cold front stretched its way across PA, with the edges of a high pressure system following behind the front. The front brought rain and clouds throughout PA.
8/31
Temperatures dropped into the low 70’s because of the cold front that swept through the area yesterday. A high pressure system centered over NY reaching into the upper half of PA
