April 2004 Pennsylvania Weather Summary

April started as a cloudy and rainy month in Pennsylvania as a low-pressure system trekked across the state from the 1st through the 3rd. Temperatures cooled considerably on the 4th due to a cold front bringing in air from the north. These lower temperatures, in conjunction with moisture, caused some snow to fall across the Laurel Highlands. This late season event produced seven inches of snow in Laughlinton, PA in Somerset County on the 4th and 5th.

Conditions fluctuated greatly early in the month however. On the 6th, high pressure had begun to dominate the area, allowing clouds to depart and temperatures to rise into the 70's across southeastern PA on April 7th. Cloudy skies and periods of rain plagued Pennsylvania on the 8th as a low pressure system arrived. Milder temperatures returned to the state on the 9th as high pressure built in from the plains. Clouds returned for Easter Sunday and rain plagued the entire state on the 12-14th as a low pressure system slowly moved toward the Atlantic, and temperatures remained well below normal. As the drenching low pressure system cleared out of the area, high pressure took over and brought seasonably warm temperatures to the Commonwealth and dry conditions for the next several days.

On the 17th, a trace of rain fell in western Pennsylvania ahead of an occluded front. On the 19th, high temperatures extended into the mid to upper 80s, 20+ degrees warmer than an average day in mid-April. Rain showers plagued the state daily through the 24th as the front slowly trailed across Pennsylvania. A cold front immediately followed this front, bringing additional precipitation and cool temperatures on the 28th. On the 29th, the clouds cleared away and temperatures warmed up for a pleasant end to the month.
